What’s happening in Genetics?
The Sequence is a free weekly newsletter that delivers updates in genetics news in a fun, contemporary and accessible way. I’m a genetic counselor- it’s my JOB to explain this stuff in such a way that people can digest it.
Think of it as a way to get your genetics updates from your friend at happy hour. Sit down with your favorite drink and allow me to tell you what’s going on- quickly and easily.
Why should I care about genetics?
Because it’s everywhere! Genetics is quickly changing standard medical care and making it more personalized; you may or may not have heard of the buzzwords ‘personalized medicine’ or ‘precision medicine’ popping up lately- that means that we are now able to use genetics to understand more about medical conditions and adapt the ways we prevent and treat them.
What’s a genetic counselor?
Genetic counselors help you to understand your risks for a genetic condition, help decide what testing may be right for you, help to interpret the results of testing, and help to assess the risk of other family members. Genetic counselors can also provide you with emotional support as integrate this information into your life, and empower you to make decisions about your overall healthcare.
